Surgical Hand Disinfection Protocol Using Bactol 90
This document outlines the standard procedure for surgical hand disinfection using Bactol 90. The process is divided into two main phases: pre-disinfection preparation and the detailed application procedure.
1. Pre-Disinfection Preparation
Before applying Bactol 90, all personnel must perform a preliminary hand and arm wash to ensure skin surfaces are clean.
- Wash Hands and Forearms: Use a non-medicated soap and running water to thoroughly wash hands, forearms, and nail areas.
- Clean Nails: Clean subungual (under the nail) areas, using a nail pick if necessary.
- Dry Thoroughly: All skin surfaces must be completely dried before commencing the surgical hand disinfection.
2. Surgical Hand Disinfection Procedure
For effective disinfection, follow the detailed application steps below. It is critical to keep hands elevated above the elbows throughout the entire process.
Step 1: Application to Right Hand and Left Forearm
- Dispense Bactol 90 into the palm of the left hand.
- Dip the fingertips and fingernails of the right hand into the solution to ensure complete coverage.
- Rub the remaining product thoroughly over the right hand and wrist, using the following motions:
- Rub the back of the hand with fingers interlaced.
- Rub palm to palm with fingers interlaced.
- Clasp each finger and thumb individually and use a rotational motion to cover all surfaces.
- Dispense more Bactol 90 into the left hand as needed.
- Starting from the wrist, rub the product down the right forearm to the elbow using a rotational motion. Keep the area wet, reapplying Bactol 90 if required.
Step 2: Application to Left Hand and Right Forearm
- Dispense Bactol 90 into the palm of the right hand.
- Dip the fingertips and fingernails of the left hand into the solution.
- Starting from the wrist, rub the product down the left forearm to the elbow using a rotational motion. Keep the area wet, reapplying product as needed.
Step 3: Duration and Final Steps
- Repeat Application: Repeat the entire application process (Steps 1 and 2) for an additional 30 seconds to ensure adequate contact time.
- Air Dry: Once the application is complete, allow hands and forearms to air dry completely.
- Don Gloves: Do not don sterile gloves until the skin is fully dry.
