Benign Salivary Gland Diseases

Characteristics and Composition3

  • Classification: Most salivary gland tumors look similar clinically. Therefore, they are classified by their microscopic appearance rather than their clinical appearance.- Composed of a mixture of cell types (epithelial and connective tissue), which is why it is also known as a *mixed tumor
  • The name "pleomorphic" refers to these multiple forms or shapes.*.
  • This is the most common benign salivary gland tumor.
  • Presents as a firm, rubbery swelling that can range in size from small to very large.

Pleomorphic Adenoma

Common Locations

  • Parotid Gland: Often located near the ear.
  • Minor Salivary Glands: The palate is the most common site.

Monomorphic Adenoma

Tumor Composition4

  • Composed of a **single cell type
  • The name "monomorphic" refers to this single shape or form.**.
  • This category includes specific tumor types such as:
    • Basal cell adenoma
    • Canalicular adenoma
    • Myoepithelioma
    • Oncocytic tumor

Treatment

  • Surgical excision is the required treatment.

Warthins Tumor

Cellular Structure5

  • Composed of oncocytes and lymphoid cells.
  • Oncocyte Definition: An epithelial cell containing an excessive number of mitochondria.
    • Microscopically, these appear as large, pink-staining (eosinophilic) cells.

Clinical Presentation

  • Usually found in the parotid gland.
  • Most commonly affects older men.
