Types of Screening Tools
- Three main types of screening tools have been introduced :
- CPITN
- BPE
- PSR
- The type used at the OCHWA clinic as of 2026 (PSR) will be discussed here, but they are all pretty similar so shouldn’t matter as much

Specifics
- The PSR records a “snapshot” of periodontal status. The mouth is divided into sextants (18-14, 13-23,28-24 etc) and each sextant is scored from 0-4.
Abnormalities
- Sextant with 2 or less teeth doesn’t get charted source
- but if it was 1 tooth it gets charted with the sextant beside it source
Sources
The first mention of the PSR seems to come from a 1994 document in the American Academy of Periodontology but that source is difficult to find now, so the above is a compilation of various different retellings
“A complete description of the PSR is provided in the Periodontal Screening and Recording System training manual (1992) sponsored by the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Dental Association.” (Jeffcoat et al., 1997, p. 717) (pdf)
