Red Flags:
- Age is a big
- Crossing the midline or approaching the midline
- “Ring around the collar” (keratinization of free gingiva) can be Proliferative verrucous Leukoplakia
- “Diease of middle aged women”, can be seen in men as well
- Unexplained mobility in immunosuppressed person, think of mucormycosis
Oral hairy leukoplakia :
- Seeing an uptick in EBV mediated cases rather than HIV cases
Chronic ulcerative stomatitis:
- can often be mistaken for oral lichen planus
- “if patients being treated with OLP are recalcitrant, consider CUS”
Squamous cell carcinoma:
- Don’t discount it as ddx even if patient is young , rater in younger people are increasing?
HSV ;
- consider this with weird non-sepcific symptoms
Cemento-osseous dysplasia
- florid or focal the best option is to stay away from it
- avascular bone , even deep root planing could affect it
