#### Tissue Health and Protection

The design of the major connector must prioritize the health of the surrounding soft tissues and the gingival margins. Key considerations include:

- **Gingival Clearance**: The borders of the major connector should be positioned away from the gingival margins to prevent irritation and entrapment of food debris. 
    - In the maxillary arch, the connector should be at least 6 mm away from the gingival margin.
    - In the mandibular arch, the connector should be at least 3 mm away from the gingival margin.
- **Avoidance of Undercuts**: The connector should not be placed in areas of soft tissue undercuts unless necessary, as this can lead to tissue impingement during insertion and removal.
- **Relief**: Appropriate relief must be provided where the connector crosses the gingival tissues or bony prominences, such as a palatal torus or the mandibular symphysis, to prevent pressure spots.

#### Patient Comfort and Minimal Interference

To ensure patient acceptance, the major connector should be as unobtrusive as possible:

- Not able to be relined.
- Higher cost of production.
