In order to grow properly, the mandible must be able to translate. Opening on a hinge is not enough.

    • Clinical Signs of Ankylosis/Fracture:
      • Mandible shifts to the same side as the fracture because the condyle is no longer under the traction of the lateral pterygoid muscle.

      • Retrusive Chin: Because the mandible cannot grow anteroposteriorly, the patient develops a deficient chin.
