Malignant Connective Tissue Tumors

Terminology

Malignant connective tissue tumors are found deeper in the submucosa. Unlike malignant mucosal lesions, which are epithelial in origin and referred to as carcinomas, these submucosal lesions use the root sarcoma at the end of their names. Many of these represent a malignant conversion of benign lesions and share the same cells of origin.

Fibrosarcoma3

  • Malignant proliferation of fibroblasts

Neurofibrosarcoma4

  • Also known as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor
  • Malignant proliferation of Schwann cells

Kaposis Sarcoma5

  • Malignant proliferation of **endothelial cells
    • Endothelial cells line the inside of various organs, including blood and lymphatic vessels
    • Often found on the hard palate**
  • Caused by HHV8 and most commonly seen as a complication of AIDS
  • Purple lesion

Leiomyosarcoma

Smooth Muscle Malignancy

  • Malignant proliferation of smooth muscle cells

Skeletal Muscle Malignancy

  • Rhabdomyosarcoma: Malignant proliferation of skeletal muscle cells

Adipose Malignancy

  • Liposarcoma: Malignant proliferation of fat cells

Leiomyoma

  • Neoplasm of smooth muscle cells

  • Neoplasm of fat cells
  • Most common on buccal mucosa
